BYD’s New Seal 08: Fast, Big, and Weirdly Affordable

It’s here. The Seal 08. BYD didn’t whisper it out. They dropped a flagship sedan under the Ocean Network banner, right in China. Mid-to-large luxury class. But the price? Starts at $28,980 USD (196,900 Yuan). Entry-level configurations. That number hurts. Especially for competitors who think “luxury” means five digits.

Two ways to move it. Pure electric. Plug-in hybrid. You pick your poison.

The bones underneath

First thing you notice? The size. It’s massive.

Length: 5,150 mm.
Width: 1,999 mm.
Height: 1,505 mm.

Wheelbase stretches 3,030 mm. That’s legroom back there. Proper legroom. BYD claims optimized space for the rear row, and judging by the footprint, they’re not bluffing.

But big cars handle small problems better. Thanks to rear-wheel steering. Standard equipment. Turning radius is 4.95 meters. You don’t hear “big sedan” and “agile” together much. Well. Get used to it.

Under the metal is the DiSus-A system. Closed dual-chamber air suspension. Paired with road preview sensors. It reads the asphalt before the tires hit it. Damping adjusts in real time. Smooth ride over bad roads? That’s the claim. And honestly. The hardware looks capable enough.

The chassis balances ride comfort over varied surfaces while handling tight cornering demands.

Juice and Fire

Let’s talk power.

Electric models ride on an 800V platform. This supports BYD’s “flash charging”. Second-generation Blade batteries. Output peaks at 510 kW. Range hits 905 km on CLTC standards. 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds. It goes.

The plug-in hybrids? A bit more complex.

1.5T engine. Dual motors. Total output: 400 kW.

Battery pack holds 45.36 kWh. Pure electric range here is 400 km. Combine that with the gas tank, and BYD promises 1,660 km of range. Under test conditions, yes. But still. That’s a long week of driving without touching a pump. Or a plug. Which one matters more to you? Probably depends on how much you like stopping.

Inside the box

Zero-gravity seats up front. Dual. With ventilation and massage. All occupants get this treatment. No classism in the comfort department.

Screens? Oh boy.

15.6-inch touchscreen for the infotainment. 12.3-inch instrument panel. 26-inch AR display for the windshield. That last one is wild. Augmented reality navigation projected in your line of sight. It adds up. Maybe too much up? Or maybe it’s just the future.

LiDAR sensor onboard. For auto-parking and navigation assistance. You don’t steer as much anymore. Does it make driving boring? Or freeing?

Sales reality check

Deliveries started last month. Before sales officially opened. Early interest was strong. Look at May’s wholesale numbers in China. DataTracker shows the hierarchy clearly.

  1. Sealion 06 : 18,856
  2. Yuan UP : 17,043
  3. Song Pro DM-i : 15,497

The Qin Plus EV sat at 12,976 units. Dolphin at 12,815.

Qin L DM-i managed 10,015 units. Song Ultra EV wasn’t far behind with 9,958. Then comes Seagill with 9,813. Seal 06 sold 8,398. Finally, Sealion 05 DM-i rounded it out at 7,456.

Volume is high. The lineup is deep. BYD is everywhere. The Seal 08 is the new crown jewel. Affordable crown. Does that change everything? Maybe.

It definitely changes the conversation.
