You want the old one?
Forget it.
The manual transmission versions of the 78 Troop Carrier, 79 double-cab pickup, and 76 GXL wagon remain off the market. For the time being. That is Toyota’s phrasing, and it leaves plenty of room for doubt.
Orders did reopen for the Toyota LandCruiser 70 range. Specifically, the automatic models. If you drive sticks, you are waiting.
There was a pause before this. July last year. Toyota stopped taking orders for the 76 GXL Wagon automatic. Supply constraints caused long waits, frustration followed, so they pulled the plug. A few months later? The entire lineage vanished from the local catalog.
Why?
Euro 6 ‘Stage C’ emissions rules.
Heavy-duty vehicles now need to clean up their act.
The solution is AdBlue. An exhaust additive. It lowers nitrogen oxide emissions. The tanks have been fitted, the compliance work done, and the gates opened for deliveries to restart. You can order the automatic 76 Wagon, 78 Troop Carrier, and 79 Pickup body styles again.
Is this a major spec overhaul?
Barely.
The engine remains the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel. Output stays flat at 150kW and 500Nm with the six-speed automatic. Nothing new under the hood really, just the plumbing.
One of the changes for model year 26 involves fitting a 20-litre AdBlue tank.
Other than that, the 78 series loses fuel capacity. The tank shrunk from 180 to 130 litres to align with other variants. Space for emissions tech costs space for gas. It’s a fair trade maybe, maybe not.
Find the AdBlue port on the front left fender. Lockable lid. If you are looking at single-cab chassis models, check between the cab and rear wheel on the left.
Sales tell a stark story.
Down 82% by the end of May. That is massive. Despite Toyota ordering extra supply during the pause to cover demand, the dip was severe. Why order extra when the market is gone for six months? Hard to predict.
The Toyota Coaster bus gets similar treatment. Euro 6 Stage C upgrades underway. Production for Australia expected to return early next year.
Regulations drove this. New models with a Gross Vehicle Mass over 3500kg had to comply from 2024. Existing models got until November 2025 via ADR 80/04. Now the law is law.
The 70 Series lives another year. Automatic only, mostly. The wait might not be worth it if you need a manual. Who does anyway?
But the question hangs in the air, thick as diesel fumes before the AdBlue hits it. Will they ever bring back the manual?
