Zeekr Aims for the Top: High-Performance and Ultra-Luxury Flagships on the Horizon

Zeekr, the premium electric vehicle arm of China’s Geely Auto Group, is aggressively pivoting toward the upper echelons of the automotive market. According to Mars Chen, Zeekr’s Global Vice President, the brand’s future strategy hinges on two distinct pillars: high-performance vehicles and super-luxury flagships. This move is designed to elevate Zeekr’s brand positioning, moving it beyond a standard premium label to compete directly with established prestige marques like Porsche, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz.

Speaking from Zeekr’s headquarters in Hangzhou, Chen outlined a clear roadmap. The goal is not merely to sell more cars, but to redefine the brand’s identity through engineering excellence and exclusive luxury.

The Two Pillars of Ascension

Chen emphasized that “going up” in brand hierarchy requires tangible proof of capability. This is achieved through:

  1. Performance: Developing vehicles with genuine track-ready dynamics and power figures that rival the world’s best sports cars.
  2. Super Luxury: Creating flagship models that offer bespoke, high-end experiences comparable to the most exclusive limousines and SUVs.

“In general, Zeekr wants to go up in the brand position. You go up by two things: number one, do an actual performance car; number two, do a super luxury model. Both directions are in this house.”

This strategy is already visible in recent releases. The Zeekr 8X, particularly its tri-motor versions, exemplifies the performance angle, while the upcoming Zeekr 9X will feature a four-seat “Grand” configuration, mirroring the ultra-luxury positioning of the Zeekr 009 Grand.

Hardcore Off-Roaders and Sports Sedans

The brand’s ambitions extend beyond city SUVs and sedans. Chen confirmed that Zeekr’s R&D team is actively exploring hardcore off-road vehicles, drawing inspiration from benchmarks like the Land Rover Defender OCTA and the Mercedes-AMG G63 Offroad Pro.

Simultaneously, the development of sporty sedans and even dedicated sports cars remains a priority. However, Chen was explicit about what Zeekr will not do: produce smaller, entry-level models.

Despite the success of the compact Zeekr X, Chen ruled out the introduction of smaller variants like a hypothetical “5X” or “6X.” He likened Geely’s brand structure to Volkswagen Group’s hierarchy, placing Zeekr firmly in the Porsche slot—focused on high-end, high-margin vehicles rather than volume-driven compact cars.

The Lynk & Co Connection and Shared Platforms

While Zeekr leads the charge in electric performance, its sibling brand, Lynk & Co, is also exploring high-performance territories. Lynk & Co recently unveiled a striking two-door GT concept to mark its 10th anniversary. This 2+2 seater boasts a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of just 2.0 seconds, blending classic proportions with modern electrification.

Given that Zeekr holds a 51% controlling stake in Lynk & Co, and the two brands have a history of sharing design DNA (Zeekr’s first model, the 001, originated as a Lynk & Co concept), there is significant potential for technology sharing. The platforms underpinning these high-performance concepts could spawn multiple models across the Geely group, leveraging economies of scale while maintaining distinct brand identities.

Implications for the Australian Market

For Australian consumers, this strategic shift signals a more sophisticated lineup in the coming years. Zeekr Australia’s Chief Marketing Officer, Tony Zhou, confirmed that the brand is in the early stages of building momentum, currently driven by the Zeekr 7X.

To gauge local appetite for its future flagships, Zeekr is organizing exclusive preview events:

  • Focus Groups: Small-scale test drives of the Zeekr 9X and 7GT are being arranged to gather feedback from early adopters.
  • The “Grand” Question: While the luxurious Zeekr 009 people mover is already sold in Australia, the ultra-premium four-seat 009 Grand variant—featuring lounge-like rear armchairs and a 40-inch entertainment display—is currently under consideration for local import.
  • The 9X Launch: The flagship 9X SUV, which offers a similar four-seat configuration in China, is expected to arrive in Australia either late this year or early next. The final lineup specifications, including whether the top-tier luxury trim will be included, are yet to be confirmed.

Performance Without Compromise

Even models that do not reach “super-luxury” status will still deliver formidable power. The Zeekr 8X, for instance, will not feature a four-seat ultra-luxury trim, but its top-spec ‘Dawn’ version is a performance beast.

Powered by a tri-electric-motor extended-range plug-in hybrid system, the 8X Dawn produces over 1000 kW of power and 1400 Nm of torque. With a claimed 0-100 km/h time of under 3.0 seconds, it is engineered to compete directly with high-performance SUVs from Audi Sport, BMW M, and Mercedes-AMG.

Conclusion

Zeekr’s strategy is clear: abandon the mass-market compact segment to focus exclusively on high-performance and ultra-luxury vehicles. By leveraging Geely’s vast resources and shared platforms, Zeekr aims to cement its status as a true premium contender, offering Australian buyers a new tier of electric performance and exclusivity.
