New spy photos reveal Xpeng’s upcoming Mona D02 SUV, slated for a 2026 release. This vehicle is part of the company’s strategy to boost sales with more affordable electric vehicles. The D02 will likely be priced around $21,700, following the success of the Mona M03 sedan, which has revitalized Xpeng’s market position.

Design and Exterior Features

The Mona D02 carries the same design language as the M03, including the signature T-shaped headlights and a black front bumper with integrated air vents. The SUV features sleek, semi-hidden door handles and a sloping roofline that gives it a coupe-SUV aesthetic. A panoramic sunroof adds to the modern look.

Unlike some competitors, the D02 will rely on a pure vision-based assisted driving system, skipping LiDAR technology. This means the car will use cameras and AI to handle urban assisted driving, powered by a large language model.

Interior and Performance

Inside, the D02 is expected to have a similar layout to the M03, with a large infotainment screen as the focal point. The powertrain will be a single-motor setup delivering around 215 horsepower. The battery is expected to be a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) blade type, aiming for a range of approximately 373 miles (600 km) on a single charge.

Pricing and Market Context

Xpeng is estimating the Mona D02 SUV will be priced around 150,000 yuan (approximately $21,700). Given that the Mona M03 sedan currently sells for between $17,400 and $20,300, this positioning makes sense.

Why this matters: Xpeng faced declining sales in early 2024, and the Mona M03’s launch turned that around. The company is betting that the D02 will repeat that success. There’s even speculation that Xpeng might brand the low-cost lineup as “Monalisa,” pairing the Mona and Lisa models.

The D02 is more than just another EV; it’s a key move in Xpeng’s survival strategy. The company must replicate the M03’s success to maintain momentum in the competitive EV market.
