Volkswagen is preparing a new, all-electric compact SUV called the ID. Cross, designed to compete with popular models like the Ford Puma Gen-E and Renault 4. Prototypes of the vehicle have been spotted undergoing testing, and early images confirm the production version will closely resemble the concept model revealed earlier this year.

Positioning in the Market

The ID. Cross is positioned as the electric counterpart to the existing VW T-Cross, marking Volkswagen’s broader push into affordable EVs. The company plans to leverage familiar model names like “Polo” and “Golf” alongside the “ID.” branding to increase consumer recognition. This shift is part of a wider strategy to offer more accessible electric options, with the ID. Cross expected to cost around £25,000 when it launches in late 2026.

Design and Features

The ID. Cross retains a muscular stance reminiscent of the Amarok pickup, featuring flared wheel arches and plastic cladding. A floating roof design with louvres nods to the classic VW Type 2 Bus and the ID. Buzz MPV. The vehicle is built on the MEB+ platform, allowing for a spacious cabin despite its compact size – approximately 4.2 meters in length.

Inside, Volkswagen is addressing criticisms of previous models by incorporating more physical controls, including buttons and toggles, alongside digital interfaces. The interior will feature soft materials, intuitive menus, and a calming color scheme. Additional features include a front trunk (“frunk”) offering 25 liters of storage and a 450-liter rear boot, which is larger than its main competitor, the Renault 4.

Performance and Range

The ID. Cross will use a 208bhp electric motor driving the front wheels. The car will offer a range of up to 261 miles on a single charge. It shares its platform with upcoming models such as the ID. Polo and Cupra Raval, all part of Volkswagen’s wider “Electric Urban Car Family” built in Spain.

Volkswagen’s EV Strategy

Volkswagen is committed to delivering truly affordable EVs, starting with the ID. Polo in 2026, followed by the ID. Cross, and eventually the ID.EVERY1 in 2027, priced below £18,000. The company’s new naming strategy blends established model names with the “ID.” moniker to maximize brand recognition and accelerate EV adoption.

The ID. Cross is a key part of this effort, representing Volkswagen’s commitment to a future where electric vehicles are accessible to a broader audience.
