Toyota Considers Dedicated GR Dealerships Globally

Toyota is evaluating a shift to standalone dealerships for its high-performance Gazoo Racing (GR) sub-brand, potentially creating exclusive showrooms focused on sports cars and hot hatches. This move signals a major investment in GR’s identity, positioning it as one of Toyota’s five global brand pillars by late 2025.

Elevating the GR Brand

At the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix, Toyota Australia executives confirmed a strategic review of GR’s brand structure. This review includes consideration for independent showrooms – a concept described as a “candy store” for performance enthusiasts. The company has already heavily invested in GR through product development and motorsport participation, making it a key part of Toyota’s broader performance strategy.

Expanding the GR Lineup

Currently, GR operates as a sub-brand within Toyota. However, the potential for standalone dealerships coincides with an expansion of the GR model range. Beyond the GR Yaris, GR Corolla, GR86, and GR Supra, Toyota plans to introduce standalone models like the hybrid V8-powered GR GT supercar, set to launch in Japan in 2027. The GR GT is designed to be a unique offering, unlike the GR86 (which shares a platform with the Subaru BRZ) or the GR Supra (based on the BMW Z4).

Historical Context and Future Plans

Toyota has experimented with performance-focused dealer programs before, with its earlier Toyota Racing Development (TRD) line of modified vehicles. The current strategic review suggests a more substantial commitment to GR as a distinct brand, though no specific timelines or the number of potential dealerships have been announced. Toyota also has Lexus, Daihatsu (no longer sold in Australia), and Century as other key global brands.

The move underscores Toyota’s ambition to grow GR into a recognized performance division, separate from its mainstream models. This strategy is likely driven by the increasing demand for high-performance vehicles and the desire to cultivate a dedicated enthusiast base. The GR GT could be the flagship product in these standalone showrooms, solidifying GR’s position as a premium sports car brand.
