The extended-wheelbase Tesla Model Y – known as the Model Y L – has received regulatory approval for sale in the European Union, according to automotive regulatory tracking accounts on social media. This development significantly increases the possibility of the larger Model Y variant becoming available in Australia.

Key Specifications and Design Changes

The Model Y L features a stretched chassis, offering space for up to six passengers with captain’s chairs in the second row and a three-person bench in the rear. Its dimensions are 4976mm long, 1982mm wide, and 1668mm tall, with a 3040mm wheelbase—184mm longer overall and 150mm longer in wheelbase than the standard Model Y. Ride height has been slightly increased by 2mm.

Battery and Performance

The approved European variant is equipped with an 88kWh battery pack, providing a WLTP-certified range of 681km when paired with 19-inch alloy wheels. The Model Y L uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, combining a 142kW front motor with a 198kW rear motor, achieving a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 4.5 seconds.

Pricing and Production

Currently, the Model Y L is manufactured exclusively in China, where it starts at ¥339,000 (approximately A$72,800)—¥25,500 (A$5500) more expensive than the standard Model Y Long Range. Initial European sales are expected to rely on exports from China rather than local production at Tesla’s German facility.

Implications for Australia

Australian Design Rules (ADRs) align closely with European standards, suggesting that EU approval for the Model Y L substantially improves its chances of being sold in Australia. However, minor differences in regulations—such as those related to seatbelt anchor points or side-impact standards—could still pose hurdles, as demonstrated by past vehicle compliance issues in the Australian market.

The EU approval is a strong signal that the Model Y L could be adapted for Australian roads, but local regulations will determine the final outcome.
