New Sports Vehicle Planning Office Drives Motorsport Push
Subaru has launched a dedicated Sports Vehicle Planning Office, signaling a renewed commitment to performance engineering. The team’s first project: a rally-optimized BRZ featuring a turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive. This development follows Toyota’s recent creation of an AWD, turbocharged GR86, suggesting a growing trend toward enhanced performance options in the sports coupe segment.
Key Features and Design Changes
The lifted BRZ, designed for competition in the All Japan Rally Championship, boasts significant modifications from the standard model. A single teaser image reveals a more aggressive body kit with flared wheel arches, a prominent rear wing, a roof scoop, and hood vents. The car’s increased ground clearance, robust suspension travel, and chunky tires clearly indicate its off-road focus.
Design cues suggest a modernized front bumper reminiscent of the Mazda Miata, while shortened overhangs and revised taillights further differentiate the rally car. Despite these changes, Subaru confirms that the vehicle retains the original BRZ wheelbase, though engineering an all-wheel drive system into a platform not originally designed for it presents unique challenges.
No Production Plans… Yet
Subaru emphasizes that this high-riding BRZ is strictly for rally competition. There are no current plans for a road-legal version. However, the company states that the Sports Vehicle Planning Office aims to bridge the gap between its street car and motorsport divisions, suggesting that future road-going models may benefit from the technology developed for racing.
Given the second-generation BRZ has been in production for almost six years, a direct consumer version may not materialize soon. Nevertheless, this increased collaboration between engineering teams is expected to yield promising results in the long term.
Championship Debut Imminent
The turbocharged, all-wheel drive rally BRZ will debut during the first half of the 2026 All Japan Rally Championship season. This move underscores Subaru’s dedication to motorsport and demonstrates how racing can influence future vehicle development.
