Porsche K1: New Luxury SUV Will Share Platform with Audi Q9, Launch with V6 and V8 Engines

Porsche is moving forward with its long-planned seven-seat SUV, codenamed ‘K1’, but with a significant shift in strategy. The vehicle will now share its platform with the upcoming Audi Q9 and will launch first with high-powered V6 and V8 gasoline engines instead of the previously considered all-electric setup.

Delayed Electrification, Shared Costs

Porsche initially aimed for a fully electric K1, based on Volkswagen Group’s Scalable Systems Platform. However, engineering delays – particularly with software development – and a recent slowdown in EV demand prompted a change of course. The decision to use the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) alongside the Audi Q9 is primarily a cost-saving measure. Developing the K1 on existing architecture helps offset the expenses of Porsche’s broader EV lineup, including the Taycan.

Market Positioning and Engine Options

The K1 will target the high-end luxury SUV segment, directly competing with models like the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS. It will be available in four-, five-, and seven-seat configurations. Engine options will include twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6s and 4.0-liter V8s, offering similar power outputs to Porsche’s Cayenne (348bhp–730bhp). A plug-in hybrid version is also expected.

“The K1’s move to the PPC is a key factor in helping Porsche offset the high cost of developing its new electric models.”

Production and Future Plans

The K1 will be manufactured alongside the Q9 at Volkswagen Group’s Bratislava plant in Slovakia. Porsche confirms that an all-electric K1 remains in the long-term product plan, but the gasoline-powered version will arrive approximately 12 months after the Q9’s initial launch next year. Both the US and China are critical markets for this vehicle, along with Europe, where the UK is expected to be a key consumer base.

Why This Matters

The K1’s shift to combustion power highlights the growing financial pressures on automakers accelerating electrification. While EVs remain central to Porsche’s strategy, the company is prioritizing cost-effectiveness and market demand in the short term. The decision to share a platform with Audi underscores the importance of economies of scale in the automotive industry, even for luxury brands. The K1 demonstrates a pragmatic approach to expanding into new segments without overextending development budgets.
