Mercedes-Benz is preparing to launch the third generation of its GLA compact SUV in 2026, bringing significant improvements in efficiency, technology, and powertrain options. The new model will leverage the company’s advanced MMA platform, offering both fully electric and hybrid variants. This move positions the GLA as a key entry point into Mercedes’ latest-generation vehicle lineup.
Electric Powertrains and Range
The next GLA will feature an all-electric lineup with three distinct powertrain options. The long-range GLA 250+ will pair an 85kWh battery with a 262bhp rear-mounted electric motor, targeting a competitive range of 400-420 miles. A higher-performance, all-wheel drive GLA 350 will also utilize the 85kWh pack, boosting power to 348bhp with dual motors.
A more affordable GLA 250 variant will join the lineup later, using a smaller 58kWh battery to lower the entry price. This is designed to undercut rivals, such as the BMW iX1 and Audi Q4 e-tron, which currently offer maximum ranges of around 320-350 miles.
Key Technological Advancements: The new GLA will adopt an 800V electrical system and Mercedes’ latest digital architecture, making it a “software-defined vehicle” capable of extensive over-the-air updates and streamlined function communication. This will facilitate potential future updates, including semi-autonomous driving features.
Hybrid Option Remains
For drivers not yet ready to switch to all-electric, Mercedes will continue to offer a hybrid variant. This model will share the 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and 48V mild-hybrid system found in the new CLA and GLB, with output ranging from 160bhp to 190bhp.
Performance Variants: AMG is developing high-performance, dual-motor EV variants mirroring the previous GLA 35 and GLA 45 trims. Mercedes will not offer diesel options for the MMA platform.
Interior and Software
Inside, the new GLA will feature a 10.25-inch driver display combined with a 14.5-inch main touchscreen. It will run the latest MBUX system with enhanced AI-based voice recognition, mirroring the setup in the CLA and GLB.
Space and Design: Interior space should see modest improvements over the current GLA, while electric versions will benefit from added storage under the hood.
