Nissan Australia is releasing a highly exclusive special edition of the Z coupe, honoring the model’s seven-generation legacy and paying homage to the legendary Midnight Purple color made famous by the Skyline GT-R. Just ten units of the 2026 Nissan Z Heritage Edition will be available, finished in the signature color-shifting Midnight Purple and paired with 19-inch bronze forged-alloy wheels from RAYS.

Reviving a Legendary Color

The Heritage Edition’s Midnight Purple isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s a direct nod to Nissan’s performance heritage. The paint, which shifts between deep purple and hidden tones depending on the light, first appeared on the R33 Skyline GT-R in 1995. Later refined through R34 and even a final run on the R35 GT-R before production ended in 2025, this color has become synonymous with JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) performance culture.

The use of the paint is significant because it taps into a deep well of nostalgia and passion among car enthusiasts. Midnight Purple is more than just a color: it’s a statement. This is about celebrating a lineage of iconic cars, not just launching a new model.

Pricing and Mechanicals

At $77,410 (before on-road costs), the Heritage Edition carries a modest premium over the standard Z. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain remains unchanged: a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 producing 298kW (about 400 horsepower) and 475Nm (350 lb-ft) of torque, driving the rear wheels.

The Heritage Edition arrives before the planned minor facelift for the Z later this year, meaning it’s based on the current pre-facelift model.

Standard Equipment and Differences

The Heritage Edition includes a comprehensive list of standard features:

  • 19-inch alloy wheels
  • Automatic LED headlights and high-beam
  • Mechanical limited-slip differential
  • Launch control
  • Active Noise Control and Sound Enhancement
  • Heated, 4-way power-adjustable leather seats
  • 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster
  • 8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • 8-speaker Bose sound system

However, unlike the Z Nismo, the Heritage Edition lacks upgrades such as larger brakes, sport bucket seats, and Nismo-tuned launch control. This positions it as a stylistic tribute rather than a performance-focused variant.

Z Lineage: A Seven-Generation Legacy

The Z’s origins trace back to 1969 with the Datsun 240Z (Fairlady Z in Japan). Designed as an affordable, six-cylinder alternative to European sports cars, its sleek design set the tone for all subsequent Z models. From the 260Z and 280ZX through the 300ZX (Z31 and Z32), the 350Z, and the 370Z, each generation built upon the original formula. The current Z, launched in 2023, represents the seventh iteration of this iconic line.

The Heritage Edition is a reminder that Nissan understands the emotional connection many drivers have with its history. This limited run isn’t just about selling cars; it’s about honoring the Z’s enduring appeal.

The Nissan Z Heritage Edition stands as a unique offering for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate the blend of nostalgia and modern performance. With only ten units available, it’s a rare opportunity to own a piece of JDM history.
