MG Motor Australia has confirmed a “dual car strategy” for its popular electric hatchback lineup, announcing that an updated version of the current MG 4 Electric will arrive “very soon” to sit alongside the newly launched MG 4 EV Urban.
This move suggests that rather than replacing the existing model entirely, MG intends to use the new “Urban” variant as an entry-level price leader while offering a refreshed, higher-spec version of the original MG 4 to cater to different consumer needs.
A Refined Interior and Strategic Positioning
According to Meng Chen, Head of Product for MG Motor Australia, the upcoming facelift for the standard MG 4 will focus heavily on improving the user experience. Key anticipated changes include:
- Enhanced Ergonomics: A move toward more physical switchgear and controls, moving away from the heavy reliance on touchscreens seen in previous iterations.
- Revised Cabin Layout: A more conventional center console and a driver instrument cluster housed within a traditional binnacle, rather than a free-standing unit.
- Market Segmentation: The model lineup will be restructured to ensure the updated MG 4 does not compete directly with the more affordable MG 4 EV Urban, which currently tops out at a $34,990 drive-away price point.
Technical Specifications and Performance
While the interior is receiving a significant overhaul, the core electric powertrains are expected to remain largely consistent with the current lineup. Based on the UK rollout of the 2026 model, consumers can expect several distinct performance tiers:
1. The Long Range Specialist (64kWh)
This variant utilizes a 64kWh LFP battery paired with a 140kW rear-axle motor. It offers a balanced profile with a 0–100km/h time of 7.5 seconds and a WLTP combined range of approximately 452km.
2. The Extended Range (77kWh)
For those prioritizing distance, the 77kWh version uses a Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) battery. This model features a more powerful 180kW motor, delivering a quicker 6.2-second sprint to 100km/h and a combined WLTP range of 545km.
3. The High-Performance XPower
The flagship XPower variant is designed for enthusiasts, featuring a dual-motor drivetrain producing 320kW and 600Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0–100km/h in just 3.8 seconds, though its combined WLTP range is lower at 405km due to the high power output.
What This Means for the Market
MG’s decision to maintain two versions of the same vehicle is a tactical response to the diversifying EV market. By offering the Urban as a budget-friendly option and the facelifted MG 4 as a more premium, feature-rich alternative, MG can capture both price-sensitive buyers and those looking for higher performance and better build quality.
In Australia, the updated MG 4 is expected to launch later this year, with pricing likely starting around the $40,000 drive-away mark to maintain a clear distinction from the Urban model.
Summary: MG is adopting a two-pronged approach by launching a budget-friendly “Urban” model alongside a refreshed, premium version of the original MG 4, ensuring they cover a wider range of price points and performance expectations in the electric hatchback segment.
