MG’s upcoming large plug-in hybrid SUV, the S9, has been revealed through safety testing reports from Euro NCAP. This model, based on the QS already sold in Australia, is poised to become a direct competitor to vehicles like the Kia Sorento, expanding MG’s lineup with a spacious, electrified option.
Powertrain and Features
The MG S9 PHEV features a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, delivering front-wheel drive. Notably, it includes a third row of seating, setting it apart from PHEV rivals like the Skoda Kodiaq. The powertrain is expected to mirror the HS Super Hybrid, combining a 105kW/230Nm engine with a 154kW/340Nm electric motor for a total output of 220kW and 350Nm.
The HS Super Hybrid uses a 24.7kWh battery, enabling up to 120km of electric-only range. While the leaked images don’t show significant cosmetic differences, the S9’s plug-in hybrid capabilities suggest a focus on fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
Safety Ratings
Euro NCAP awarded the MG S9 PHEV a five-star safety rating, scoring 84% for adult occupant protection, 85% for child occupant protection, 74% for vulnerable road user protection, and 77% for safety assist systems. Sister authority ANCAP gave the petrol-powered QS a similar five-star rating, with slightly higher scores in each category. ANCAP noted that child seats are not recommended for the third row due to the lack of top-tether anchor points.
Market Position
MG introduced the QS in Australia mid-2025, marking its first local offering of a three-row SUV. The model has quickly gained traction, with 777 deliveries already this year. This performance places it ahead of the Nissan Pathfinder (636) and close behind the Skoda Kodiaq (1035) in sales figures, indicating strong consumer interest.
MG trademarked the QS PHEV and QS Plug-in Hybrid names late last year, signaling this launch was expected. The S9’s arrival will likely shake up the large SUV segment, offering a competitive plug-in hybrid option at an accessible price point.
The MG S9 PHEV is set to enter a competitive market with a compelling combination of space, efficiency, and safety, potentially disrupting established players in the large SUV category.
