Mercedes-Benz is extending its Maybach luxury sub-brand into the van segment with the upcoming VLS model, a high-end MPV designed to compete in the growing market for spacious, chauffeur-driven vehicles. The confirmation came from Mercedes-Benz Group CEO Ola Källenius during a presentation in Beijing, marking the first time the Maybach name will be applied to a van.
New Positioning in Van Line-Up
The Maybach VLS will be the flagship of Mercedes’ refreshed van line-up, built on the new VAN.EA platform that also underpins the VLE – the successor to the popular V-Class. Unlike its predecessor, the VLS will be exclusively electric, aligning with the broader shift towards EV luxury. The standard VLS production is set to begin in late 2026, with the Maybach version following in 2027.
Designed for Rear-Seat Luxury
Källenius described the VLS as a “grand limousine,” emphasizing its focus on interior space, rear passenger comfort, and chauffeur-driven use. This reflects a growing trend in markets like China and parts of Asia, where luxury MPVs are gaining popularity due to their versatility, spaciousness, and extended wheelbases. The Maybach VLS will offer multiple seating configurations, including a high-end two-seat option seen in the Vision V concept.
Interior Focus: A “Private Lounge” on Wheels
Mercedes is positioning the VLS as a mobile first-class experience, with descriptions highlighting a “first-class interior” and an “extraordinary private lounge” cabin. While it’s not yet confirmed if the Vision V’s retractable 65-inch 4K cinema screen will make it into production, the focus is clearly on providing an unmatched level of luxury and entertainment for rear passengers.
The move into the ultra-luxury van segment demonstrates Mercedes-Maybach’s adaptability to evolving consumer preferences, particularly in regions where spacious, high-end transportation is highly valued. The VLS aims to redefine the van experience, transforming it from a utilitarian vehicle into a premium mobile suite.
