Chinese automaker JAC Motors is aggressively expanding its presence in the Australian ute market with a wider range of T9 models designed to undercut established rivals like the Toyota HiLux. The new lineup includes entry-level Oasis, mid-range Osprey, and premium Osprey X variants, all arriving in showrooms now.
Pricing and Positioning
The most affordable option is the Oasis dual-cab/chassis, priced at $41,162 before on-road costs (excluding the factory alloy tray). JAC plans to release an even cheaper Tradepro variant soon. The Osprey and Osprey X dual-cab pickups are priced at $46,629 and $47,079 respectively. A key strategy is positioning these models to qualify for novated leasing and salary packaging schemes, by keeping payloads under 1000kg (Osprey/Osprey X offer 980kg).
Key Features and Differences
The Oasis provides a 1165kg payload capacity, ideal for heavier tasks. The Osprey variant adds a power sunroof (for an extra $999) and reduces payload to 980kg. The Osprey X builds on the Osprey with black exterior trim, including badges, wheels, and grille, at an additional $450. These trims emphasize style over raw utility, a move aimed at buyers who prioritize features over maximum load capacity.
Standard Equipment and Safety
All T9 models come standard with comprehensive safety features:
– Autonomous emergency braking (forward and reverse)
– Adaptive cruise control
– Blind-spot monitoring
– Driver monitoring system
– Lane-keep assist
– Rear cross-traffic alert
They also include LED headlights, a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, wireless charging, leather upholstery, and a power driver’s seat. This level of standard equipment is competitive, offering comparable features to more expensive alternatives.
Mechanical Specs and Warranty
The T9 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine producing 125kW/410Nm, paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. It features a four-wheel drive system with a BorgWarner dual-range transfer case and locking rear differential. JAC backs the T9 with a seven-year, unlimited-kilometer warranty, including a complimentary loan ute program, 24/7 roadside assistance, and capped-price servicing.
Sales Performance and Competition
Since launching in early 2025, JAC has delivered 1362 T9s in Australia. While sales are growing, the T9 still trails behind competitors such as the KGM Musso (1773), LDV T60 (3699), and GWM Cannon (5975). JAC’s aggressive pricing and feature-rich packages are designed to disrupt the market and gain market share.
The new JAC T9 variants represent a calculated effort to appeal to a broader range of Australian buyers, from budget-conscious tradies to salary-packaging customers. The company’s long warranty and competitive pricing could make it a serious contender in the crowded ute segment.
