Genesis G80 to Gain Hybrid Option Amidst EV Shift

0

Genesis is refocusing on hybrid technology for its G80 sedan following a slower-than-expected transition to fully electric vehicles. The company confirmed plans last year to introduce hybrid, electric, and range-extended models, and the first hybrid version of the G80 has now been spotted in prototype testing.

Powertrain and Performance Expectations

Hyundai (Genesis’ parent company) has announced a new 2.5-liter turbocharged hybrid system for rear-wheel-drive vehicles, launching in 2026. This system uses a dual-motor setup: one for start-up, energy recovery, and assist; the other for propulsion and regenerative braking. The goal is to improve both power and efficiency while minimizing noise and vibration.

Early reports indicate this hybrid powertrain is similar to the one already used in the Hyundai Palisade, where it produces 329 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque. The Palisade version combines a 2.5-liter turbo engine with a small 1.65 kWh battery pack and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Styling Updates

The G80 Hybrid prototype was photographed during winter testing with heavy camouflage. Visible changes include a redesigned front bumper with updated air intakes. Genesis recently refreshed the G80 in 2024 with updated fascias, wheels, and new Micro Lens Array LED headlights. The interior also received upgrades, including a new dashboard, center console, switchgear, and a 27-inch OLED display. It remains unclear if these changes will remain exclusive to the hybrid model.

Why This Matters

Genesis’ move back to hybrids comes as EV sales growth slows in some markets. The company is likely hedging its bets by offering buyers a more familiar and readily available powertrain option while continuing to develop fully electric vehicles. This approach allows Genesis to compete more effectively in segments where hybrid technology remains popular, particularly among luxury car buyers who prioritize fuel efficiency and refinement over full electrification.

The G80 Hybrid is expected to arrive later this year, with full details revealed as the launch date approaches.
