Geely has launched updated versions of its Starshine 8 plug-in hybrid sedan in China, with presales starting at 142,800 yuan (approximately $20,740 USD). This move aims to reinvigorate sales after a noticeable slowdown in deliveries since its initial launch in May 2025. The updated model boasts significant enhancements, including a LiDAR-based assisted driving system, active suspension, and improved powertrain options.

Market Context and Previous Performance

The original Starshine 8 quickly gained traction, achieving peak monthly sales of 10,191 units in October 2025 and a total of 80,462 units sold domestically. However, recent figures show a decline – with only 3,033 units delivered in February 2026. This rapid introduction of an updated version underscores the competitive pressure in China’s EV market, where manufacturers must continually innovate to retain consumer interest. The pace of change in this sector demands aggressive product cycles.

Key Upgrades and Technology

The Starshine 8 retains its sleek exterior design, but introduces new color options, “Sunny Gold” and “Danxia Mine.” More importantly, the top-trim model now features the G-Pilot H5 advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS), co-developed with Afari Technology (partially owned by Mercedes-Benz). This system leverages LiDAR, multiple radar and camera sensors, and the Nvidia Drive Orin chip to enable Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) functionality on both urban roads and highways. This represents a significant leap in autonomous driving capabilities for Geely. The system also includes an AI-powered voice assistant, dual-screen functionality, and compatibility with most smartphones through Flyme Auto 2 OS.

Powertrain and Performance

The updated Starshine 8 offers two powertrain choices: a standard 1.5-liter engine paired with an electric motor (257 kW/345 hp) and a more powerful EM-P plug-in hybrid system with a 1.5-liter turbo engine and electric motor (300 kW/402 hp). The EM-P variant accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.35 seconds. Notably, the updated model increases the battery capacity to 28.3 kWh, enabling a pure electric range of up to 225 km (CLTC). The new battery also supports fast DC charging, reaching 80% charge in just 15 minutes. The combined range for the Starshine 8 is reported at 1,725 km.

Suspension and Dimensions

The vehicle’s dimensions remain consistent at 5018/1918/1480 mm with a 2,928 mm wheelbase. An upgrade has been made to the suspension system, now featuring continuous damping suspension for improved ride comfort.

Geely’s quick response to declining sales with this updated Starshine 8 demonstrates the intense competition in the Chinese automotive market. The inclusion of advanced technology and increased battery capacity positions the vehicle as a strong contender in the plug-in hybrid segment.
