Dodge has reversed course and reintroduced the V-6 engine option for the 2026 Durango, specifically in the GT trim. This decision comes after initial plans to offer an all-V-8 lineup for the redesigned SUV. The move aims to address pricing concerns and broaden the Durango’s appeal in a competitive market.
Why the V-6 Was Dropped, Then Brought Back
Originally, Dodge eliminated the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, opting for a solely V-8 powertrain configuration. However, the absence of a more affordable option made the Durango one of the priciest three-row SUVs available. Competitors like the Kia Telluride, Ford Explorer, and Toyota Grand Highlander all offer lower starting prices.
Engine Specs and Pricing
The reinstated 3.6-liter V-6 produces 295 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque — the same figures as the previous iteration. The 2026 Durango GT with the V-6 will start at $40,990 (including destination charges), a $500 increase from the 2025 model. This is $3,500 cheaper than the V-8-powered GT, which begins at $44,490. All-wheel drive is available as a $2,000 upgrade for the V-6 model.
Production Timeline and Future Outlook
Dodge cites the “ramping up” of Hemi engine supply as the reason for bringing back the V-6. The third-generation Durango has been in production since 2010, with only minor updates over the past decade. A fully redesigned Durango is not expected until 2029, meaning the current model will continue largely unchanged for the next three years.
V-8 Options Remain
For buyers seeking more power, Dodge still offers the Durango with the 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 (475 hp) and the supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat V-8 (710 hp). Order books for the V-8 engines will open in early 2026, with the Hellcat now available in more states.
The return of the V-6 demonstrates Dodge’s responsiveness to market realities and consumer preferences. The company adjusted its strategy to provide a more accessible price point while still catering to performance enthusiasts with high-horsepower options. This move should make the Durango a more competitive choice in the crowded three-row SUV segment.
