The Chery Tiggo 4, the latest and smallest SUV from the Chinese automaker, is now available for pre-order in the UK at a starting price of just £19,995. This makes it significantly more affordable than competitors like the Dacia Duster, Ford Puma, and MG ZS, even in hybrid trim.
Price Disruption in the Small SUV Market
The Tiggo 4’s aggressive pricing puts pressure on established brands. The Dacia Duster, renowned for its affordability, begins at nearly £22,000, with the hybrid version exceeding £25,000. The MG ZS starts slightly above £20,000, but its hybrid model climbs to almost £23,000. Other popular choices like the Citroen C3 Aircross, Skoda Kamiq, and Ford Puma all require larger upfront investments. Even Chery’s related brand, Omoda, lists its hybrid models at a higher price point.
This pricing strategy positions the Tiggo 4 as a strong contender in the budget-friendly SUV segment, potentially reshaping consumer expectations.
Specifications and Features
Despite the low price, the Tiggo 4 offers a competitive feature set. At 4.3 meters long, its dimensions closely match the Dacia Duster. All models come standard with dual 12.3-inch displays, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a rear-view camera. Safety features include adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, lane departure warning, and rear collision warning.
An upgrade to the Summit trim adds £2,000, bringing artificial leather upholstery, a 360-degree camera, a cooled wireless charging pad, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, and privacy glass. The Tiggo 4 is also backed by a 7-year/100,000-mile warranty.
Hybrid Powertrain and Performance
The Tiggo 4 utilizes a full-hybrid powertrain, combining a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a 1.83kWh battery. This setup delivers a combined output of 201bhp and 310Nm of torque, resulting in a 0-62mph acceleration time of 8.9 seconds. Fuel efficiency averages 53.2mpg, though rivals like the Dacia Duster Hybrid and Renault Captur E-Tech offer slightly higher figures.
Design and Interior
The Tiggo 4’s exterior design aligns with Chery’s larger Tiggo 7 model, featuring an upright SUV profile, a floating roofline effect, and a prominent grille. The interior shares design elements with the Tiggo 7, including the dual 12.3-inch displays and steering wheel design. The dashboard layout, with its shortcut buttons, is a new addition for Chery. Luggage capacity is a competitive 430 liters, expanding to 1,155 liters with the rear seats folded down.
The Chery Tiggo 4 represents a significant move in the small SUV market, offering a compelling combination of affordability, features, and warranty coverage. Its availability this summer is expected to draw attention from budget-conscious buyers and potentially disrupt the pricing strategies of established competitors.
