BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has reached a significant milestone in its infrastructure rollout: the commissioning of its 5,000th flash charging station just 27 days after initiating the project. The latest addition, located near Lanzhou in Gansu Province, underscores the company’s aggressive expansion under its “Flash Charging China” initiative.
Nationwide Coverage and Charging Performance
The flash charging network now spans 297 cities across China. BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery technology enables exceptionally fast charging speeds: 10% to 70% capacity in approximately 5 minutes, and up to 97% in around 9 minutes under standard temperatures. Even in extreme conditions (-30°C), the charge time remains competitive, reaching 97% in roughly 12 minutes.
Durability and User Experience
BYD emphasizes the safety and reliability of its flash charging system. Rigorous testing, including 500 flash-charging cycles, confirmed no instances of thermal runaway even under extreme stress (needle-piercing tests). The company backs this with a lifetime warranty on battery cells. The stations also feature a unique suspended-cable design, keeping connectors clean and off the ground, along with automatic billing and plug-and-charge functionality – eliminating the need for smartphone apps or manual payments.
Rapid Growth and Competitive Landscape
BYD’s fast deployment is driven by an ambitious goal: 20,000 flash stations nationwide by the end of 2026. This expansion outpaces the combined growth of battery-swap networks operated by competitors like Nio and CATL. Other domestic companies are also accelerating megawatt-class charging facilities, intensifying competition in high-power direct charging technology.
