BYD has expanded its popular Song series with the introduction of the Song Ultra, a fully electric SUV boasting a significant power upgrade over existing models. The new vehicle positions itself as a performance-oriented option within the lineup, which currently includes both plug-in hybrid (DM-i) and electric (EV) variants like the Song L and Song Pro.

Design and Dimensions

The Song Ultra features styling cues similar to the Song Pro DM-i, with a slightly modified grille design. The rear end incorporates BYD’s signature “Chinese knot” taillight design, and the vehicle is identifiable by “EV” and “Song Ultra” badges. A roof-mounted LiDAR sensor is available as an optional upgrade.

The SUV’s dimensions are notably larger than other Song series models, measuring 4850 mm in length, 1910 mm in width, and 1670 mm in height, with a 2840 mm wheelbase. For comparison, the Song L DM-i is 4780 mm long with a 2782 mm wheelbase, and the Song Pro DM-i is even smaller at 4735 mm with a 2712 mm wheelbase. The Song Ultra’s increased size suggests a focus on interior space and comfort.

Performance and Battery

The key differentiator for the Song Ultra is its powertrain. It is equipped with a 270 kW (362 hp) electric motor, model TZ200XYAV, allowing for a top speed of 210 km/h. This is a substantial improvement over the other models in the series: the Song L DM-i has 160 kW (215 hp), the Song Pro DM-i has 120 kW (161 hp), and even the Song L EV has only 230 kW (308 hp). The vehicle utilizes BYD’s Blade battery technology, although capacity and range figures have not yet been disclosed.

The curb weight of the Song Ultra is listed as either 1,990 kg or 2,050 kg, depending on configuration.

Customization Options

Buyers can further customize the Song Ultra with a range of optional features, including three rim designs, rear and fender trim pieces, a front logo trim panel, a rear logo, a front bumper trim, and a panoramic sunroof. These options allow for personalization without compromising the vehicle’s core electric performance.

The introduction of the Song Ultra signals BYD’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric SUV performance in the Chinese market. The increased power and larger dimensions suggest this model is intended to compete directly with other high-performance electric SUVs, and the full battery specs will determine its competitiveness in range and efficiency.
