BMW X1 to Blend New Design with Familiar Engines in 2027 Update

BMW is preparing a significant mid-life overhaul for its X1 compact SUV, slated for release in 2027. The update will see the X1 range split into two distinct lines: one powered by internal combustion engines (ICE) and the other fully electric. This approach mirrors BMW’s strategy for the next-generation 3 Series, offering buyers a choice based on powertrain preference. The updated X1 is expected to start at around £40,000.

Design Evolution: Neue Klasse Front with Existing Chassis

While the all-new iX1 EV represents a complete redesign, the ICE-powered X1 will retain the current generation’s body and chassis from the A-pillar rearward. Prototypes confirm this, with the familiar silhouette continuing. The most notable changes will be at the front, adopting design cues from BMW’s Neue Klasse models, like the upcoming iX3. This means smaller, narrower kidney grilles and enclosed headlights.

However, the ICE version will retain open sections in the lower kidneys for engine cooling, a practical necessity not present in the electric variant. Minor adjustments at the sides and rear—including new bumpers, sills, and a roof spoiler on sportier M Performance models—will complete the exterior refresh.

Powertrain Options: Hybrid and High-Performance Turbo

Under the hood, BMW will continue offering mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The range will be topped by a high-performance turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing around 300 bhp. All-wheel drive will be standard on this variant, while lower-spec models will remain front-wheel drive.

Interior Tech: Panoramic iDrive and Next-Gen Interface

The most substantial changes will occur inside the cabin. BMW will integrate its Panoramic iDrive system, indicated by a black band at the base of the windscreen housing a full-width head-up display. This will dramatically alter the cabin’s design and layout. The updated X1 will also feature BMW’s latest touchscreen interface, though the exact size—whether the 17.9-inch unit from the iX3 or a smaller version—remains unconfirmed.

Market Position: Competing in a Crowded Segment

BMW aims to launch 40 new models by 2027, and the X1 update is critical for maintaining competitiveness in the high-volume compact premium SUV segment. It will go head-to-head with rivals like the Mercedes GLA, Audi Q3, and Volvo XC40, all of which demand constant innovation to retain market share.
