BMW is gearing up to electrify its popular X4 coupe-SUV lineup with the arrival of the all-electric iX4, promising a range exceeding 500 miles on a single charge. Prototype testing has already begun, suggesting a formal unveiling early next year. This marks a significant departure for the X4, which debuted in 2014 exclusively with gasoline and diesel engines.

Borrowing heavily from its electric sibling, the iX3 SUV, the iX4 retains many of the design cues but embraces a more dramatic roofline that slopes down towards the rear. While this aerodynamically pleasing styling may slightly reduce rear headroom, BMW anticipates it will contribute to a longer driving range. This could potentially make the iX4 the champion of electric vehicle (EV) range in the UK market, surpassing the current leader, the iX3 with its 500-mile capability.

However, a potential rival may emerge sooner – the smaller and sportier BMW i3 saloon, also built on the same platform and slated for release next year, could potentially eclipse the iX4’s range due to its sleeker profile.

Underneath its stylish exterior, the iX4 is expected to share the iX3’s powertrain options. The top-tier 50 xDrive variant boasts twin electric motors – one powering each axle – generating a combined output of 464 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. This setup enables the SUV to accelerate from zero to 62 mph in a brisk 4.9 seconds.

Furthermore, both models utilize BMW’s advanced 800V electrical architecture, allowing them to charge at blistering speeds of up to 400kW. The iX4 is anticipated to inherit this rapid charging capability. The interior promises the latest technological advancements with BMW’s cutting-edge panoramic iDrive system. This includes a striking 17.9-inch infotainment touchscreen positioned below a thin driver information display that spans the entire width of the windshield, creating an immersive and modern cockpit experience.

The arrival of the iX4 signifies BMW’s ongoing commitment to expanding its electric vehicle portfolio. It represents a bold move to electrify one of its most popular models, targeting a segment increasingly interested in sustainable driving solutions without sacrificing performance or luxury.
