BMW is redefining Alpina’s role within the company, shifting its focus exclusively towards ultra-luxury interpretations of its flagship models: the 7 Series sedan and X7 SUV. This change comes after fully integrating Alpina into the BMW Group, signaling a departure from performance-oriented tuning and a pivot towards high-end comfort and speed.

A New Direction for Alpina

Alpina’s future now revolves around maximizing luxury and power in BMW’s largest vehicles. Joachim Post, BMW’s head of R&D, confirmed that the brand “will bring Alpina from the top,” starting with the 7 Series followed by an updated version of the next-generation X7. This means Alpina will no longer compete directly with BMW’s M division, which prioritizes track performance. Instead, Alpina will emphasize speed, comfort, and exclusivity.

The End of an Era: The Final XB7

The last independent Alpina model, a limited-edition send-off version of the XB7, is already in production with just 120 units available. This marks the end of an era for the brand before its complete assimilation into BMW’s portfolio. The next step is a completely new model lineup built on BMW’s existing platforms.

What to Expect: Speed, Luxury, and Comfort

The next Alpina model will likely be based on the facelifted 7 Series, possibly debuting at the upcoming Beijing Auto Show. Spy shots confirm that BMW is preparing an updated version of the 7 Series, and Alpina will take it from there.

Previous Alpina B7 models (2016-2022) featured a 600-hp twin-turbo V8 engine paired with enhanced air suspension, interior upgrades, and subtle design tweaks. The same approach is expected for the next generation.

“Alpina is always different [to BMW M]… BMW M is for the race track, and Alpina we talk about speed, not sport. Speed, comfort, and luxury.” – Joachim Post.

This distinction is key: while BMW M targets aggressive performance, Alpina will focus on a more refined experience, blending high power with premium comfort and customization options. The strategy is designed to fill a gap in BMW’s lineup, offering a unique alternative to the M division.

Alpina’s repositioning within BMW ensures the brand’s survival while leveraging BMW’s engineering expertise and resources. By concentrating on the top-tier luxury segment, Alpina can avoid direct competition with M and carve out its niche as the ultimate in high-speed, high-comfort transportation.
