Audi Revives A2 Nameplate for New Entry-Level EV

Audi is bringing back the A2 name, but this time as an all-electric vehicle. The move signals a shift in the brand’s entry-level strategy, replacing both the A1 supermini and the Q2 crossover with a single, more premium electric option. The new Audi A2 E-Tron is expected to debut this fall, with sales starting in Europe by the end of 2026 or early 2027.

Shared Platform, Distinct Style

The A2 E-Tron will share its platform with the upcoming facelifted Volkswagen ID.3, internally known as the ID.3 Neo. However, Audi will differentiate the A2 with a more luxurious interior and styling cues that blend hatchback practicality with crossover-inspired design elements. The teaser image released during Audi’s annual conference hints at a vehicle that evokes the spirit of the original A2 minivan while adopting a modern EV aesthetic.

Production and Future Plans

Production will occur at Audi’s Ingolstadt plant, ensuring a “Made in Germany” quality standard. This launch is part of a broader refresh for Audi’s lineup, which also includes the next-generation Q7, the first-ever Q9, and a facelift for the Q4 E-Tron.

The A8 Question

Notably, Audi remains silent on the future of the A8 flagship sedan. Order books in Germany have already closed, with no confirmed replacement in sight. This raises questions about Audi’s commitment to the high-end luxury segment, especially as the brand prepares for a design overhaul with the Concept C electric sports car in 2027.

The A2 E-Tron represents a strategic bet on accessible luxury EVs, while the A8’s uncertain future suggests Audi may be prioritizing volume and electrification over traditional flagship status.

The A2 E-Tron’s arrival is not just a revival of a nameplate; it’s a clear signal of Audi’s focus on electric vehicles and its willingness to streamline its entry-level offerings. The true design revolution, however, won’t arrive until 2027 with the Concept C, leaving the 2026 lineup as a transitional step toward a bolder future.
